Ringfort (Rath), Drumsivney, Co. Cavan

A ringfort that no longer exists is still, in a sense, a place, and the one that once stood on a drumlin summit at Drumsivney in County Cavan is a quiet example of how quickly the Irish landscape can be altered.

In 1969 it was almost completely levelled, and the record of what it had been was written up by the Office of Public Works only months after that destruction, reconstructing the site largely from what had just been lost.

According to that report, the fort had consisted of a raised circular area roughly 28 metres in internal diameter, enclosed by two substantial earthen banks with an intermediate fosse, the fosse being the ditch cut between banks as part of the defensive arrangement typical of a rath, the earthen form of ringfort common across early medieval Ireland. No trace of the original entrance survived even at the time of the survey. What little remained above ground had been absorbed into the working landscape: the outer bank was heavily modified and folded into field boundaries along its eastern, southern, and south-south-western arcs, and again from the north-east. The drumlin hill itself remains, a rounded glacial landform shaped from boulder clay, and the fort would have occupied its highest point, a position that would have made it conspicuous across the surrounding countryside.

There is little to observe on the ground today. The physical fort is gone, and what persists is essentially a topographical situation and the outline of a field boundary that was once something else entirely. For anyone passing through this part of Cavan, the interest lies less in what can be seen than in understanding that the unremarkable shape of a hedge line can occasionally be the last trace of a structure that was already centuries old before it disappeared.
