Ringfort (Rath), Glanerdalliv, Co. Kerry

There is a particular category of Irish archaeological site that asks the most of a visitor's imagination: the one that is no longer there.

In the townland of Glanerdalliv in north Kerry, a circular earthwork enclosure, the kind of raised or embanked farmstead that was a commonplace of early medieval rural life across Ireland, has been levelled so completely that nothing remains above ground. What makes this vanished rath especially curious is a detail recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1841 to 1842, where the word 'cave' is marked inside the enclosure. This is almost certainly a reference to a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage often associated with ringforts and used variously for storage, refuge, or as a means of escape. By the time the next major OS survey was carried out between 1915 and 1916, that annotation had disappeared from the map, suggesting the feature had already been lost, obscured, or simply overlooked by the later surveyors.

The sequence of the two maps tells a compressed version of a story that repeated itself across the Irish countryside: a site recorded, partially documented, and then gradually erased. Ringforts, also known as raths, were typically built during the early medieval period as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community, defined by one or more circular earthen banks and ditches. Thousands survive across Ireland, but thousands more have been ploughed or levelled over the centuries, particularly during the agricultural intensification of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Glanerdalliv example was catalogued as part of C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, which drew together surviving documentary and cartographic evidence for sites that, in some cases, had already ceased to exist in any physical sense.
