Ringforts
In the townland of Lack in County Clare, a rath sits in the landscape as ringforts have done across Ireland for well over a thousand years.
A rath is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically circular and defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. At their peak, tens of thousands of them were built across the country, each one the home and working compound of a farming family operating within the Gaelic social order. That so many survive at all, even as eroded earthworks, is a quiet measure of how thoroughly they once defined the rural landscape.
