Ringfort (Rath), Liscullane, Co. Kerry

Between a farmyard feature and an ancient enclosure, the rath at Liscullane in north County Kerry sits in ordinary pastureland with one field separating it from the old Limerick and Tralee railway line.

A rath is an early medieval earthwork enclosure, typically circular or near-circular, formed by a bank of raised earth and sometimes a surrounding ditch, and used as a defended farmstead. What makes this one quietly interesting is the way its interior sits at a higher level than the surrounding ground, giving the whole feature a slightly raised, plateau-like quality even where the banks themselves have been worn down.

The site has a sub-circular plan with an internal diameter of 25.2 metres north to south. It has not survived intact. The northeastern arc through to the southern side has been substantially levelled, and only a raised area reaching 1.2 metres in height remains to give any real impression of the original enclosure. Where the earthen bank does survive, it is 6 metres wide at the base and rises on average just 0.8 metres above the surrounding pasture, with the interior floor sitting roughly 0.7 metres above the bank top, a detail which suggests deliberate construction rather than simple accumulation. These modest figures are easy to underestimate; the relationship between the interior platform and the outer bank is what signals this as a formal enclosure rather than a natural undulation in the land. The site is recorded in C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, which documented a broad concentration of such earthworks across this part of the county.
