Ringfort (Rath), Liss, Co. Clare

Ringforts, known variously as raths or lisses depending on regional usage, were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Typically circular enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, they served as farmsteads for families of varying social rank, their size and the number of enclosing banks reflecting the status of whoever lived within. That a townland should carry the word as its actual name suggests the monument here was once a conspicuous and well-understood presence in the local landscape.

Beyond the evidence carried in the placename itself, documented detail about this particular site is currently sparse. What can be said is that County Clare contains a considerable concentration of such monuments, distributed across its limestone plains and low hills, and that many remain as earthen features in fields, their banks softened by centuries of agricultural activity. Some have been reduced to cropmark traces, visible only from the air in dry summers, while others survive with enough profile to read clearly on the ground. Where exactly this example at Liss falls on that spectrum of survival is not presently recorded in accessible sources.
