Ringfort (Rath), Lissacholly, Co. Donegal

In the gently sloping fields south of the River Erne in County Donegal sits an ancient ringfort, a circular earthwork that once served as a fortified homestead during Ireland's early medieval period.

Known locally as a rath, this particular example at Lissacholly measures approximately 17 metres across its interior and remains remarkably well-preserved despite centuries of weathering and neglect. The site consists of a subcircular area surrounded by an earthen bank, beyond which lies a wide, deep defensive ditch called a fosse, with an additional outer bank that still stands about 1.5 metres high in places.

Though now completely overgrown with vegetation and skirted by a modern road along its northern and eastern edges, the ringfort's defensive features remain clearly visible to those who know what to look for. Archaeological surveys suggest there may have been an entrance on the eastern side, where residents and their livestock would have passed through the protective banks. These ringforts, which dot the Irish landscape in their thousands, were typically home to prosperous farming families between the 6th and 12th centuries AD, serving as both residence and fortress in an era when cattle raiding and local conflicts were commonplace.

The archaeological significance of this site was formally recognised during the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. Their detailed documentation helps preserve knowledge of these important monuments, which offer tangible links to Ireland's rural past and the lives of communities who farmed these lands over a millennium ago. Despite its overgrown state, the Lissacholly ringfort continues to stand as a testament to the engineering skills and social organisation of early medieval Irish society.
