Not collapsed, not overgrown, simply gone, leaving no surface trace whatsoever. What makes the site at Lissireen quietly interesting is not what remains but what the historical record tells us about how it disappeared, and when.

The place name itself carries some information. Lissireen is an anglicisation of Lios Irín, meaning the ringfort of Irín, where lios is the Irish word for a ringfort or enclosed settlement, typically a circular earthwork bank enclosing a farmstead of the early medieval period. The name preserves a personal association, though who Irín was is not recorded. What can be established from cartographic evidence is a rough timeline of loss. When the Ordnance Survey mapped the area in 1841 and 1842, the enclosure was not marked, suggesting it was already degraded or overlooked by that point. By the revised edition of 1898, however, it had been recorded, cut through by a fieldbank running northeast to southwest. That fieldbank, almost certainly a land division of the post-medieval or modern agricultural landscape, was the mechanism of erasure. Over the decades that followed the 1898 survey, whatever earthwork remained was gradually levelled until nothing visible survived at all.

For anyone inclined to visit the general area, there is little to see at the site itself. The ground gives nothing away. The interest lies in the gap between the name and the ground, between a placename that has preserved a personal identity across centuries and a physical location that has been entirely absorbed back into the working landscape.
