Ringforts
In the townland of Molosky in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its circular earthen banks marking out a boundary that has endured for well over a thousand years.
Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a family farmstead within one or more concentric banks and ditches. Tens of thousands are recorded across the country, yet each one occupies a specific piece of ground chosen for particular reasons, whether for drainage, visibility, proximity to water, or the subtler logic of a farming family reading their own land.
