The rath, as this type of ringfort is known, measures roughly 47 metres north to south and 46 metres east to west, making it a substantial enclosure. A rath is a raised circular earthen enclosure, typically dating from the early medieval period and associated with a farmstead or small settlement. What gives this particular example its quiet interest is the combination of a surviving earthen bank and an external fosse, the term for the surrounding ditch from which the bank material was originally dug, along with a scarp, a steep slope cut into the ground, that takes over as the defining boundary where the bank itself has been lost or levelled.

Two gaps interrupt the circuit of the enclosure. One at the north is relatively narrow, at 2.2 metres wide, while a second at the east-north-east opens to 8 metres. Either could represent the original entrance, though without excavation it is impossible to say whether one is a later breach or both are modern intrusions. The more intriguing feature lies in the north-west quadrant of the interior, where a rectangular hollow, about 8 metres in length and oriented roughly north-north-east to south-south-west, suggests the presence of a souterrain. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, often associated with ringforts and thought to have served for storage or as a place of refuge. Their entrances are frequently marked at the surface by just such a slight depression, which is all that remains visible here.
