Ringfort (Rath), Roosky, Co. Mayo

In the pastureland at Roosky, a low earthen circle sits quietly in the landscape, doing double duty as both ancient enclosure and modern field boundary.

The western bank of this rath, a type of circular earthwork settlement associated with early medieval Ireland, has been absorbed so thoroughly into a system of later field divisions that it now serves as an everyday farm fence, thick with blackthorn. It is the kind of archaeological survival that persists not because anyone preserved it, but because it was simply too useful to remove.

The enclosure measures roughly 30.5 metres north to south and 33.4 metres east to west, a modest but clearly defined space. It is outlined by an earthen bank and a fosse, which is the defensive ditch that typically runs around the outside of a rath, and there is a remnant of a second, outer bank surviving on the southern arc. That outer bank, standing only about half a metre high internally and externally, has been levelled everywhere else around the circuit. The fosse itself is legible on the eastern half as a shallow depression, but on the western arc a narrow channel roughly 1.4 metres wide cuts into the original line, possibly a later field ditch rather than the ancient feature. A two-metre gap in the inner bank at the southeast may mark the site of the original entrance. The southern face of the main bank is notably steep, cut almost vertically towards its base, which lends it a more deliberate, constructed quality than the rest of the circuit. The ground falls gently southward from the interior, giving the site a quiet openness toward the bog and grassland beyond.
