Rock art, Kilbaylet, Co. Wicklow

A granite boulder sitting above the flood plain of the Doll's Brook in County Wicklow carries nineteen small circular depressions, known as cupmarks, that were almost certainly made in prehistory.

Cupmarks are among the most common and least understood forms of prehistoric rock art found across Ireland and Britain; shallow, roughly circular hollows ground or pecked into stone, their purpose remains genuinely unknown. What makes this particular boulder worth pausing over is not just the carvings themselves but the way they survive alongside the scars of later interference.

The boulder is substantial, earthfast and immovable, measuring roughly 2.6 metres north to south and 1.5 metres east to west, and standing about 1.2 metres proud of the ground. The nineteen cupmarks are clustered towards the south-east side of the stone, with a single outlier drifting towards the northern end. Look closely and the cups are noticeably shallower towards the centre of the stone, suggesting either greater weathering there or some difference in how and when they were worked. The south-east edge tells a separate story: there are clear quarrying scars indicating that a section of the stone was removed at some point, taking with it whatever cupmarks or other markings may have existed in that area. The boulder sits immediately to the south of a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead commonly built across Ireland during the early medieval period, which places these prehistoric carvings in a landscape that was still being actively shaped and used by people many centuries after the cups were first made.
