Settlement deserted – medieval, Kilbride, Co. Waterford

Beside the ruins of a medieval church in Kilbride, County Waterford, the ground holds the ghost of a settlement that has almost entirely withdrawn from view. What was once described as evidence of early and extensive occupation, including mounds, earthwork enclosures, and the traceable course of an ancient road, is no longer visible at ground level. The landscape has swallowed it, leaving only clearance cairns, those modest piles of stone gathered by farmers clearing fields over the centuries, as any surface indication that something more structured once stood here.

The description comes from the antiquarian Power, writing in 1895, who recorded the features he could still observe close to the ruin of St Bridget's church. He noted mounds and lines of earthwork enclosing square spaces, the kind of layout associated with a nucleated medieval settlement, where houses, yards, and enclosures were arranged in deliberate relation to one another. He also traced an ancient road running northward between earthen ramparts for some distance. Roads of this type, bounded by low banks or ditches, were common features of medieval rural life in Ireland, connecting settlements to fields, churches, and neighbouring communities. That such a road was visible to Power in the late nineteenth century, and is not visible now, speaks to how much can change in a century of agricultural activity and soil disturbance.

The clearance cairns that remain are easy to overlook, being indistinguishable at a glance from the ordinary stonework of a working landscape. But taken together with Power's account and the proximity of the church, they point to a place that once had a community living around it, one that has since been absorbed back into the fields.
