Souterrain, Cloghaneleesh, Co. Kerry

A stone-lined hollow in the ground, roughly two and a half metres across, sitting quietly in a field in north Kerry, sounds unremarkable until you consider what it might conceal.

This circular depression, found within an ancient ringfort at Cloghaneleesh, is thought to be the entrance to a souterrain, an underground stone-built passage or chamber that was a common feature of early medieval Irish settlement. Such structures were used variously for storage, refuge, or both, and their entrances were often deliberately inconspicuous, designed to be overlooked.

The ringfort itself carries the Irish name Lisnamuck, or Lios na Muc, meaning the ringfort of the pigs. It is a univallate example, that is, one enclosed by a single bank and an outer fosse or ditch, the interior of which sits noticeably higher than the surrounding farmland. That raised interior still holds the faint outline of a rectangular house-site, the domestic footprint of whoever once lived within the enclosure. The possible souterrain entrance lies approximately four metres to the north of this house-site. The site was documented in the North Kerry Archaeological Survey compiled by C. Toal, published in 1995, which catalogued the considerable spread of early settlement remains across this part of the county.

The souterrain entrance, if that is indeed what the depression represents, has not been excavated, and what lies beneath remains genuinely unknown. That ambiguity is part of what makes the site quietly compelling: a name that remembers pigs, a bank that remembers a boundary, and a hole in the ground that may or may not lead somewhere.
