Souterrain, Killunagher, Co. Mayo

Beneath a field in Killunagher, County Mayo, there is said to be a souterrain.

The ground above it gives nothing away. No depression, no exposed stonework, no tell-tale hollow suggests that anything lies beneath. The site is, in the most literal sense, invisible.

A souterrain is an underground stone-built passage or chamber, typically constructed during the early medieval period in Ireland, between roughly the sixth and twelfth centuries. They are found across the country and are generally thought to have served as places of refuge, cool storage, or concealment, often associated with nearby settlements that have long since vanished. At Killunagher, the structure is known only through local memory. No surface feature confirms it, and no excavation appears to have established its dimensions, date, or condition. What remains is essentially an oral trace, a piece of knowledge passed between people rather than recorded in stone or timber above the soil.
