Stone Monuments
In the townland of Ardrah in west County Cork, a standing stone exists on record but not, it seems, in any form a visitor could recognise.
The site is listed as lying on a west-facing pastoral slope, yet there is no visible surface trace remaining. That combination, a named and catalogued monument with nothing left to see above ground, is more common in the Irish archaeological record than might be expected, but it still carries a particular quality of absence.
