Standing stone, Figart (Figart Ed), Co. Donegal

On the eastern slope of a hill in Figart, County Donegal, stands a solitary stone monument that has watched over the landscape for millennia.

This prehistoric standing stone measures 1.1 metres in height, with a width of 0.92 metres and a thickness of 0.45 metres, oriented along a west-northwest to east-southeast axis. Its placement on what archaeological surveys describe as "good land" suggests this location was deliberately chosen by the ancient communities who erected it.

Standing stones like this one are amongst Ireland's most enigmatic prehistoric monuments, typically dating from the Bronze Age period between 2500 and 500 BCE. Whilst their exact purpose remains a subject of archaeological debate, these monoliths may have served various functions; as territorial markers, commemorative monuments, or perhaps as part of astronomical alignments marking seasonal changes crucial to early farming communities. The orientation of the Figart stone along a roughly east-west axis could support theories about solar observations, though without additional archaeological context, its specific purpose remains tantalisingly unclear.

The stone was officially documented as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. This survey catalogued the county's field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, providing invaluable records of monuments that might otherwise be overlooked or forgotten. Today, the Figart standing stone continues to serve as a tangible link to Donegal's ancient past, a silent sentinel that connects modern visitors to the prehistoric peoples who once inhabited this corner of Ireland.
