Standing stone, Maulnagower, Co. Kerry

In a patch of boggy pasture south of the Derreendarragh river in County Kerry, a heavy block of stone rises nearly two metres out of the ground, broad-shouldered and blunt, oriented on a northwest to southeast axis.

It is not elegant in the way that some standing stones are, tapered or leaning with apparent intention. This one is massive and workmanlike, 1.32 metres wide and over a metre thick at its base, the kind of prehistoric monument that feels less like a marker and more like a statement of considerable effort.

Standing stones of this kind are scattered across the Iveragh Peninsula, that broad, mountainous finger of land that reaches into the Atlantic in southwest Kerry. They date in most cases to the Bronze Age, though precise attribution is rarely possible without excavation. Their original purposes remain a matter of debate among archaeologists, with theories ranging from territorial markers and route indicators to sites of ritual significance or astronomical alignment. This particular stone bears a visible scar on its southern face, where a section of the surface has spalled away, a term for the flaking or splitting of stone under weathering or frost. The fallen debris still lies scattered near the base, suggesting the loss is relatively recent in geological terms, a small but legible record of slow, ongoing change.
