Abbey average age in 1911

The average Abbey in 1911 was 24.2 years old, 24.8 for men and 23.7 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Abbey literacy in 1911

Of the Abbeys whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 2.6% could read but not write, and 20.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.6% reading and writing against 71.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Abbey common first names

The most common male names were Patrick (9), Thomas, John, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (9), followed by Eliza, Ellen, Julia and Margaret.

Abbey occupations in 1911

The most common entry on an Abbey's census form was "Scholar"; 15.9% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (12.2%), farm labourer (7.3%), domestic servant (2.4%) and dressmaker / milliner (2.4%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 12.2% of all Abbeys, followed by agriculture, transport and textiles & clothing.
