The 1911 Census recorded 3,291 people named Adams in Ireland, about 0.075% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 269th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,582 men and 1,702 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Adams country: 35.4% of them (1,164 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (597), Derry (288), Dublin (259) and Tyrone (228).

The average Adams in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.0 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Adams literacy in 1911
Of the Adamses whose literacy was recorded, 82.4% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.5% reading and writing against 81.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (167), William, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (138), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah and Annie.

The most common entry on an Adams's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (665) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11%), textile worker (4%), general labourer (3.5%) and farm labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.5% of all Adamses, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Adams?
The largest religious group among Adamses was Presbyterian, at 49.6%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (27.3%), Roman Catholic (15.7%), Methodist (3.8%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.5%).
