Addis in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 140 people named Addis in Ireland; roughly one in every 31,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 62 men and 75 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

The Addises were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 82.9% of them (116 people). Next came Armagh (10), Down (7), Kildare (5) and Dublin (1).
Addis average age in 1911
The average Addis in 1911 was 25.1 years old, 26.0 for men and 24.3 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Addis literacy in 1911
Of the Addises whose literacy was recorded, 75.4% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 21.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.7% reading and writing against 73.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Addis common first names
The most common male names were Robert (6), James, George, John and Thomas. For women it was Elizabeth (5), followed by Mary, Mary Jane, Sarah and Anne.
Addis occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an Addis's census form was "Scholar"; 15.7% (22) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (12.9%), general labourer (7.1%), metal worker / engineer (4.3%) and farmer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 16.4% of all Addises, followed by agriculture, general labourers and metal & engineering.
What religion is Addis?
Addises were predominantly Anglican (76.4%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (7.1%), Roman Catholic (4.3%), Congregationalist (3.6%) and Protestant (3.6%).
