The 1911 Census recorded 3,870 people named Ahern in Ireland, about 0.088% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 236th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,946 men and 1,917 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

The Aherns were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 61.4% of them (2,378 people). Next came Limerick (674), Kerry (303), Tipperary (155) and Clare (99).

The average Ahern in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.6 for men and 29.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ahern literacy in 1911
Of the Aherns whose literacy was recorded, 79.6% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 17.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (337), Patrick, Michael, William and James. For women it was Mary (339), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Bridget and Kate.

The most common entry on an Ahern's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (800) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.2%), farm labourer (6%), general labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (3.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.9% of all Aherns, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Aherns were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.3%).
