That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Aiken literacy in 1911
Of the Aikens whose literacy was recorded, 85% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 11.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.2% reading and writing against 83.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (28), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Margaret (15), followed by Sarah, Jane, Elizabeth and Mary.

The most common entry on an Aiken's census form was "Scholar"; 18.2% (87) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.3%), general labourer (3.1%) and textile worker (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.6% of all Aikens, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Aiken?
The largest religious group among Aikens was Presbyterian, at 49.9%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.2%), Methodist (6.3%), Unitarian (3.3%) and Roman Catholic (2.5%).
