The 1911 Census recorded 353 people named Alcorn in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 189 men and 160 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Alcorn in Ireland
The Alcorns were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 65.2% of them (230 people). Next came Derry (60), Antrim (16), Louth (16) and Tyrone (12).

The average Alcorn in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 29.6 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Alcorn literacy in 1911
Of the Alcorns whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 19.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.3% reading and writing against 75.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Alcorn common first names
The most common male names were Robert (26), William, John, James and George. For women it was Jane (17), followed by Annie, Mary, Margaret and Martha.
Alcorn occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Alcorns was farmer, 19.5% of them (69 people). Next came scholar / student (17.8%), farm labourer (5.7%), general labourer (3.4%) and domestic servant (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.3% of all Alcorns, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Alcorn?
Alcorns were predominantly Anglican (71.1%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (21.5%), Roman Catholic (3.7%), Methodist (1.1%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.6%).
