The 1911 Census recorded 115 people named Alford in Ireland; roughly one in every 38,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 56 men and 58 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Alford literacy in 1911
Of the Alfords whose literacy was recorded, 86.6% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 10.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 89.1% reading and writing against 83.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (6), Thomas, James, Michael and William. For women it was Margaret (4), followed by Elizabeth, Maria, Martha and Mary.

The most common entry on an Alford's census form was "Scholar"; 16.5% (19) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.7%), dressmaker / milliner (3.5%), general labourer (3.5%) and other maker / factory worker (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.6% of all Alfords, followed by textiles & clothing, transport and building & construction.
What religion is Alford?
The largest religious group among Alfords was Roman Catholic, at 49.6%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30.4%), Methodist (10.4%) and Presbyterian (9.6%).
