The 1911 Census recorded 286 people named Annett in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 151 men and 135 women.

The Annetts were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 78.3% of them (224 people). Next came Antrim (38), Armagh (19), Dublin (3) and Westmeath (2).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Annett literacy in 1911
Of the Annetts whose literacy was recorded, 83% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.7% reading and writing against 81.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (30), John, William, Charles and Thomas. For women it was Jane (10), followed by Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret and Sarah.

The most common entry on an Annett's census form was "Scholar"; 21.7% (62) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.5%), farm labourer (2.8%), textile worker (2.8%) and general labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.7% of all Annetts, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and building & construction.
What religion is Annett?
Most Annetts, 63.3%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.9%) and Roman Catholic (9.1%).
