The 1911 Census recorded 467 people named Armour in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,400 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 270 women to 197 men.

Antrim was Armour country: 48% of them (224 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (126), Derry (36), Donegal (36) and Dublin (16).
Armour average age in 1911
The average Armour in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 29.8 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Armour literacy in 1911
Of the Armours whose literacy was recorded, 79.4% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 15% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81% reading and writing against 78.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Armour common first names
The most common male names were John (30), James, Robert, Samuel and William. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Elizabeth, Maggie, Lizzie and Sarah.
Armour occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an Armour's census form was "Scholar"; 19.7% (92) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), textile worker (4.9%), general labourer (3.6%) and other maker / factory worker (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Armours, followed by textiles & clothing, manufacturing & trades and general labourers.
What religion is Armour?
Most Armours, 60.6%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.9%), Roman Catholic (9.9%), Methodist (2.4%) and Congregationalist (1.3%).
