That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Arrigan literacy in 1911
Of the Arrigans whose literacy was recorded, 79.7% could both read and write, 5.4% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.4% reading and writing against 77.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (8), James, John, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Johanna, Bridget, Catherine and Ellen.

The most common entry on an Arrigan's census form was "Scholar"; 36.4% (28) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (6.5%), fisherman (5.2%), carpenter / joiner (3.9%) and farmer (3.9%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 6.5% of all Arrigans, followed by textiles & clothing, agriculture and building & construction.
