That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Atkins literacy in 1911
Of the Atkinses whose literacy was recorded, 87.4% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 10.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 93.8% reading and writing against 81.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.4%), general labourer (4%), domestic servant (3.6%) and farmer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 6% of all Atkinses, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Atkins?
Most Atkinses, 52.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (27.7%), Methodist (9.6%), Presbyterian (7.2%) and Jewish (2.8%).
