Women came out slightly ahead, 89.7% reading and writing against 75% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.7%), farm labourer (8%), general labourer (4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28% of all Baggotts, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and food & drink.
