That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Barbour literacy in 1911
Of the Barbours whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 16.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.3% reading and writing against 77.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.7%), textile worker (6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%) and general labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.4% of all Barbours, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.

Most Barbours, 56.3%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (26.4%), Roman Catholic (10.4%), Methodist (2.6%) and Protestant (1.5%).
