The 1911 Census recorded 5,968 people named Barrett in Ireland, about 0.136% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 122nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,892 men and 3,072 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

Cork was Barrett country: 25.9% of them (1,545 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Mayo (1,313), Galway (493), Dublin (469) and Kerry (468).

The average Barrett in 1911 was 28.9 years old, 28.5 for men and 29.3 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Barrett literacy in 1911
Of the Barretts whose literacy was recorded, 73.6% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 22.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 75.5% reading and writing against 71.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Barrett common first names
The most common male names were John (485), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (556), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Catherine.
Barrett occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Barrett's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (1,235) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.6%), general labourer (3.9%), farm labourer (3.5%) and domestic servant (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.5% of all Barretts, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Barrett?
Barretts were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.8%), Methodist (0.5%), Presbyterian (0.5%) and Non-Conformist (0.1%).
