The 1911 Census recorded 520 people named Bartley in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 246 men and 271 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Bartleys, 17.9% (93 people). Next came Tyrone (43), Down (40), Limerick (39) and Mayo (37).

The average Bartley in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 30.9 for men and 30.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bartley literacy in 1911
Of the Bartleys whose literacy was recorded, 77.6% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.4% reading and writing against 75.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (31), Thomas, Patrick, Michael and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Ellen, Maggie, Margaret and Anne.

The most common entry on a Bartley's census form was "Scholar"; 21% (109) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.3%), farm labourer (5.2%), general labourer (3.7%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.3% of all Bartleys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Bartley?
Most Bartleys, 69.8%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (17.7%), Presbyterian (7.9%) and Methodist (0.4%).
