Of the Battles whose literacy was recorded, 71.9% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 25.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 74.5% reading and writing against 69.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (22), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and Martin. For women it was Bridget (15), followed by Mary, Catherine, Anne and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Battles was farmer, 30.5% of them (67 people). Next came scholar / student (18.6%), farm labourer (3.6%), domestic servant (1.4%) and retired / pensioner (1.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 34.5% of all Battles, followed by domestic service, retired & pensioners and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Battle?
Battles were predominantly Roman Catholic (85.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.2%).
