The 1911 Census recorded 1,575 people named Baxter in Ireland, about 0.036% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 551st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 766 men and 808 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The average Baxter in 1911 was 28.1 years old, 27.6 for men and 28.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Baxters whose literacy was recorded, 78.3% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 17.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), textile worker (6%), general labourer (4%) and farm labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.2% of all Baxters, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

The largest religious group among Baxters was Roman Catholic, at 34.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (33.2%), Presbyterian (27.8%), Methodist (1.6%) and Baptist (0.8%).
