The 1911 Census recorded 236 people named Beggan in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 109 men and 127 women.

The Beggans were heavily concentrated in Fermanagh, home to 50.8% of them (120 people). Next came Meath (44), Monaghan (43), Dublin (12) and Louth (6).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Beggans whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 5.2% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.3% reading and writing against 72.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (15), Patrick, John, Peter and Thomas. For women it was Mary (14), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Ellen and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Beggans was farmer, 31.4% of them (74 people). Next came scholar / student (15.7%), farm labourer (3.8%), textile worker (2.5%) and general labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 35.2% of all Beggans, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Beggan?
Beggans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.4%).
