The 1911 Census recorded 916 people named Benson in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 463 men and 452 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Sligo had the largest share of Bensons, 16% (147 people). Next came Antrim (132), Dublin (105), Limerick (93) and Armagh (82).

The average Benson in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 29.5 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Benson literacy in 1911
Of the Bensons whose literacy was recorded, 81.1% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (59), James, William, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (42), followed by Catherine, Annie, Ellen and Bridget.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.4%), general labourer (4.7%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.2%) and domestic servant (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.2% of all Bensons, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Benson?
The largest religious group among Bensons was Roman Catholic, at 46.7%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37.6%), Presbyterian (3.8%), Methodist (3.2%) and Baptist (1.1%).
