Of the Bentleys whose literacy was recorded, 74.3% could both read and write, 8.2% could read but not write, and 17.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76% reading and writing against 72.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.3% of all Bentleys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

Most Bentleys, 65.1%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (30.1%), Methodist (2.7%), Non-Conformist (0.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.5%).
