Berry in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 1,356 people named Berry in Ireland, about 0.031% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 623rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 696 men and 658 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Berry in Ireland
Mayo had the largest share of Berrys, 12.5% (169 people). Next came Down (150), Dublin (128), Offaly (110) and Cork (94).
Berry average age in 1911
The average Berry in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 28.4 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Berry literacy in 1911
Of the Berrys whose literacy was recorded, 72.2% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 22.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Berry common first names
The most common male names were John (96), Thomas, Patrick, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (88), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Elizabeth and Annie.
Berry occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Berry's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (271) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.3%), general labourer (4.5%), textile worker (2.7%) and farm labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.5% of all Berrys, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Berry?
Berrys were predominantly Roman Catholic (71.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (20.9%), Presbyterian (5.8%), Methodist (0.8%) and Unitarian (0.3%).
