Bible in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 78 people named Bible in Ireland; roughly one in every 56,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 45 women to 33 men.
Counties with Bible in Ireland
Dublin was Bible country: 26.9% of them (21 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Waterford (19), Cork (13), Carlow (11) and Kilkenny (5).
Bible average age in 1911
The average Bible in 1911 was 36.1 years old, 37.5 for men and 35.1 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bible literacy in 1911
Of the Bibles whose literacy was recorded, 92% could both read and write, 1.3% could read but not write, and 6.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 93.2% reading and writing against 90.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Bible common first names
The most common male names were Stephen (5), William, James, John and Robert. For women it was Annie (5), followed by Mary, Catherine, Edith Gladys and Elizabeth.
Bible occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Bible's census form was "Scholar"; 11.5% (9) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were clerk / office worker (6.4%), no occupation / dependent (5.1%), carpenter / joiner (2.6%) and domestic servant (2.6%). Grouped by sector, clerical & administration accounted for 6.4% of all Bibles, followed by domestic service, no occupation / dependent and agriculture.
What religion is Bible?
Most Bibles, 55.1%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (43.6%).
