The 1911 Census recorded 320 people named Birch in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 149 men and 167 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Birch country: 25.3% of them (81 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (66), Monaghan (29), Antrim (23) and Armagh (21).

The average Birch in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 30.2 for men and 31.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Birch literacy in 1911
Of the Birches whose literacy was recorded, 82.4% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 13% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 84.9% reading and writing against 80% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Birch common first names
The most common male names were William (15), James, John, Thomas and George. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Jane, Annie, Elizabeth and Sarah.
Birch occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Birch's census form was "Scholar"; 20.3% (65) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.9%), general labourer (3.8%), metal worker / engineer (3.1%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.1% of all Birches, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Birch?
The largest religious group among Birches was Anglican, at 40%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (33.8%), Presbyterian (20%), Methodist (3.1%) and Congregationalist (1.2%).
