Bird in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 636 people named Bird in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 310 men and 322 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Bird in Ireland
Dublin was Bird country: 27% of them (172 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Meath (102), Cork (71), Cavan (64) and Antrim (52).
Bird average age in 1911
The average Bird in 1911 was 27.1 years old, 26.8 for men and 27.3 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bird literacy in 1911
Of the Birds whose literacy was recorded, 80.7% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 16.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Bird common first names
The most common male names were John (41), Michael, James, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (35), followed by Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Bridget.
Bird occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Bird's census form was "Scholar"; 21.1% (134) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.1%), general labourer (6.3%), domestic servant (3.1%) and farm labourer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14% of all Birds, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Bird?
Most Birds, 67.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24.1%), Presbyterian (3.1%), Methodist (2.4%) and Non-Conformist (0.9%).
