The 1911 Census recorded 66 people named Blacker in Ireland; roughly one in every 67,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 34 men and 32 women.

The Blackers were heavily concentrated in Armagh, home to 60.6% of them (40 people). Next came Antrim (19), Dublin (2), Wexford (2) and Kildare (1).

The average Blacker in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 28.1 for men and 31.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Blacker literacy in 1911
Of the Blackers whose literacy was recorded, 68.2% could both read and write, 7.6% could read but not write, and 24.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 70.6% reading and writing against 65.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Blacker common first names
The most common male names were James (5), George, Edward, John and Joseph. For women it was Elizabeth (6), followed by Mary, Agnes, Eva and Anne Jane.
Blacker occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Blacker's census form was "Scholar"; 19.7% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.2%), textile worker (9.1%), domestic servant (3%) and no occupation / dependent (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.7% of all Blackers, followed by textiles & clothing, professional and domestic service.
What religion is Blacker?
The largest religious group among Blackers was Anglican, at 47%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (36.4%) and Presbyterian (16.7%).
