The 1911 Census recorded 1,856 people named Blake in Ireland, about 0.042% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 472nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 907 men and 942 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Blake in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Blakes, 17.1% (317 people). Next came Cork (267), Clare (207), Meath (131) and Galway (125).
Blake average age in 1911
The average Blake in 1911 was 31.6 years old, 31.6 for men and 31.7 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Blake literacy in 1911
Of the Blakes whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 16.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (133), James, Patrick, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (154), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Ellen and Catherine.
Blake occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Blake's census form was "Scholar"; 16.4% (305) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.6%), general labourer (5.5%), farm labourer (3.3%) and domestic servant (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.8% of all Blakes, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Blake?
Blakes were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.9%), Presbyterian (1.5%), Methodist (0.2%) and Congregationalist (0.1%).
