The 1911 Census recorded 524 people named Boal in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,400 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 288 women to 235 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Women came out slightly ahead, 84.1% reading and writing against 81% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (24), John, Robert, William and George. For women it was Mary (30), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.

The most common entry on a Boal's census form was "Scholar"; 18.9% (99) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.8%), textile worker (7.3%), farm labourer (3.1%) and carpenter / joiner (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.4% of all Boals, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and building & construction.
What religion is Boal?
Boals were predominantly Presbyterian (71.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (14.1%), Unitarian (4.8%), Roman Catholic (3.1%) and Baptist (1.7%).
