Bogue in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 183 people named Bogue in Ireland; roughly one in every 24,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 84 men and 99 women.
Counties with Bogue in Ireland
Fermanagh was Bogue country: 38.3% of them (70 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Tyrone (45), Dublin (27), Monaghan (17) and Cavan (9).

Bogue average age in 1911
The average Bogue in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 28.6 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bogue literacy in 1911
Of the Bogues whose literacy was recorded, 73.6% could both read and write, 7.7% could read but not write, and 18.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.6% reading and writing against 69.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Bogue common first names
The most common male names were James (12), John, Hugh, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Bogue occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Bogue's census form was "Scholar"; 21.9% (40) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.8%), farm labourer (6.6%), domestic servant (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.9% of all Bogues, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and building & construction.
What religion is Bogue?
Bogues were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (6%), Plymouth Brethren (2.7%) and Presbyterian (0.5%).
