The 1911 Census recorded 853 people named Bolton in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,100 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 433 men and 419 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Boltons, 22% (188 people). Next came Derry (124), Clare (78), Antrim (55) and Down (48).

The average Bolton in 1911 was 27.9 years old, 27.4 for men and 28.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Boltons whose literacy was recorded, 79.6% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 80.8% reading and writing against 78.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Bolton's census form was "Scholar"; 21.1% (180) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9%), farm labourer (4.8%), general labourer (4.1%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.1% of all Boltons, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Bolton?
The largest religious group among Boltons was Roman Catholic, at 44.3%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.4%), Presbyterian (18.4%), Methodist (0.2%) and Protestant (0.2%).
