The 1911 Census recorded 132 people named Boreland in Ireland; roughly one in every 33,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 73 men to 59 women.

The Borelands were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 59.8% of them (79 people). Next came Down (32), Donegal (15), Derry (4) and Tyrone (2).

The average Boreland in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 27.2 for men and 31.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Boreland literacy in 1911
Of the Borelands whose literacy was recorded, 73.4% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 21.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.2% reading and writing against 69.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), James, Thomas, Robert and William. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Elizabeth, Annie, Lizzie and Mary Jane.
Boreland occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Boreland's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (27) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (10.6%), farm labourer (7.6%), general labourer (7.6%) and farmer (6.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.4% of all Borelands, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Boreland?
Most Borelands, 68.9%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (16.7%), Roman Catholic (9.1%) and Methodist (5.3%).
