Of the Bowes whose literacy was recorded, 83.4% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 12.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.5% reading and writing against 82.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (59), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (64), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Catherine and Anne.
