The 1911 Census recorded 237 people named Bowles in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 120 men and 117 women.

Cork had the largest share of Bowleses, 24.9% (59 people). Next came Limerick (31), Dublin (28), Sligo (18) and Antrim (15).

The average Bowles in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 28.3 for men and 31.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Bowles literacy in 1911
Of the Bowleses whose literacy was recorded, 77.7% could both read and write, 5.4% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 80% reading and writing against 75.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (14), James, John, Michael and Patrick. For women it was Margaret (12), followed by Mary, Elizabeth, Ellen and Jane.

The most common entry on a Bowles's census form was "Scholar"; 18.6% (44) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), domestic servant (3.4%), farm labourer (3.4%) and general labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.6% of all Bowleses, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Bowles?
Most Bowleses, 50.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.4%), Presbyterian (6.8%), Non-Conformist (2.5%) and Quaker (1.3%).
