That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Boydes whose literacy was recorded, 66.7% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 27.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 71.1% reading and writing against 60.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Boyde's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (14) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (10.3%), farm labourer (8.8%), carpenter / joiner (2.9%) and dressmaker / milliner (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.3% of all Boydes, followed by general labourers, public service & defence and professional.

Most Boydes, 51.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.4%), Presbyterian (13.2%) and Methodist (2.9%).
